Persephone, in greek mythology, daughter of Zeus and Demeter, once seen as a goddess of nature, picking flowers, then abruptly kidnapped by Hades. She becomes the goddess of the underworld. Though later rescued, she was tricked into eating a few pomenagrate seeds - thus for one season every year, Persephone must return to the underworld. While she is there all land turns to a barren realm.
Demeter, her mother, is the goddess of the earth..
